The First Time Outside This Year

There is one afternoon in April that matters more than the others. It has no requirements and no occasion. The only rule is that you take whatever you do and you do it outside, and that it is the first time this year.

A book and coffee. A yoga mat. A chair in the sun with nothing at all. It does not matter what you bring. What matters is that you sit down outside and remember that sitting outside with no errand is something you do.

Find a spot in the sun. Bring whatever makes sense for you. Sit down before you have talked yourself out of it on account of there still being a bit of a chill.

The first five minutes you will be aware of how cold the chair is. Stay anyway. By ten minutes, the sun will have done its work. Notice what the air actually smells like where you are sitting, in your yard or on your step or your balcony. It will be specific to this week. It will be different by next week and gone entirely by May.

That is the whole ritual. It takes nothing except the decision to go outside before conditions feel fully cooperative.

One note: if April genuinely will not behave and every afternoon is miserable, an open window with a chair pulled close counts. The point is the air moving through. The point is letting the outside in before it formally invites you.
