Before Spring Arrives, Make Some Room

Clean entry, open window, natural light, simple and undecorated

Something is coming.

You can feel it in the light, in the particular restlessness of early March, in the way the year feels like it is finally starting to move. Spring isn't here yet but it is close enough that you can feel the approach of it. That anticipation has its own energy and it would be a shame to waste it on the couch.

This is the week before the season turns. A good week to do something with your hands that says: I'm ready.

Not a grand gesture. Not a weekend project that requires a trip to the hardware store. Just a few deliberate things that clear the old season out and make actual room for what's next.

Here is what I'm doing. Take what fits.

Sweep the entry. Not a quick pass. The full thing. Corners included. The entry is the first thing the house meets when you walk in and it deserves the attention. This is threshold work. It matters more than it looks like it does.  This includes the doormat.

Open one window. Just briefly. Even if it's cold. Let the house breathe. You'll know when it's enough.

Burn a nearly finished candle down. Don't move it to the back of the shelf because it's almost done. Finish it before the season turns. Clear the space. There is something satisfying about ending one thing cleanly before you begin the next.

Reset the linen closet or pantry. Not just a tidy. Actually take it apart and put it back together with intention. You'll find things you forgot you had. You'll throw out three things that have no business being there. The reset matters more than the result.

Light something new for the season. A new candle, a new scent, something that marks the turn. Not a ceremony. Just a moment of this is the new one, this is now.

None of this takes a full day. All of it is worth doing.

The anticipation of possibility needs somewhere to land. A cleared entry, a reset shelf, a window opened and closed again. Small things that say the house is ready even if you aren't quite sure for what.

Spring arrives next week. Make some room.
