Why Some Candles Smell Stronger Than Others

Not every candle throws scent the same way, and there is no single reason why. It comes down to a handful of things working together, or not working well together.

Fragrance oils made for candles are formulated to perform under heat. Other oils, including some essential oils, were not made for sustained heat and can behave unpredictably once burning. Fragrance has to bind properly with the wax during production, or the scent won't distribute evenly through the candle.

The wick matters too. Too small, and the candle never builds enough heat to release much scent. Too large, and it burns through the fragrance faster, taking the lighter top notes first, which is part of why citrus can sometimes smell sharp or almost fuel-like when a wick runs hot. The wax plays into this as well, since a wick that performs perfectly in one wax can behave completely differently in another.

Then there's fragrance load, the ratio of oil to wax, and the fragrances themselves, some of them are not intended to knock your socks right off.

On top of all that, your nose and your house are their own variables. Two people in two different homes will not always smell the same candle the same way, and that's not a flaw in either one.
