Possibility Is the Good Part. It's Also Not the Whole Thing.

Open notebook with handwritten notes, good pen beside it, natural light, no staging

There is a particular feeling that arrives before the thing actually happens.

Not hope exactly. Something more specific. The moment when an idea stops being abstract and starts feeling real. When you can almost see it. When the year is no longer new but something in it hasn't settled yet and you can feel that there is still room to move.

That is March. That is possibility. And it is one of my favo

rite things.

I love this stage. The idea that hasn't been tested yet. The plan that could still go any direction. The notebook filling up nicely. The research that keeps turning up interesting things. There is something genuinely good about the moment before, and I am not here to rush you through it.

But I'll tell you what I also know, because I have lived this and I own a lot of notebooks. At some point the planning becomes the project. The research becomes the activity. The preparation becomes a very productive way to not actually begin. I have made very thorough, very beautifully written plans for things that never left the page. The notes were excellent. Nothing moved.

Possibility has a next step. The seed stage is real and worth honoring. It is not, however, the whole garden.

March is a good month to ask yourself honestly: is this still the seed stage, or have I just gotten very comfortable here?

One practice for March:

Look at something you've been planning. Not to add to the plan. Just ask: what is one step, however small, however imperfect, that moves this from the notebook into the world?

The notebook will still be there. It's a good notebook.
