The name has a story behind it. In Greek mythology, Hyacinthus was a youth loved by Apollo. The wind god Zephyrus was jealous. When Apollo threw a discus, Zephyrus blew it off course. It struck Hyacinthus and killed him. Where his blood fell, a flower grew. Apollo named it after him.
